What to expect from the exercise physiologist
Our exercise physiologist will provide information on exercise and assist each patient with a personalized exercise program, unique to each individual situation. Exercise helps strengthen the heart and lungs to aid in the reduction of surgical complications. After surgery, each patient is advised to walk in their room every hour that they are awake. Once patient is discharged to return home, they are encouraged to walk every waking hour, progressively building up to 20 minutes of light walking for the next two weeks. For weeks 2-4, patients are informed that they can now slowly begin back on their pre-operative exercise plan; no resistance training, no abdominal workouts. After the first month, they may begin weight training and abdominal workouts, with doctor’s approval. Furthermore, they are to continue cardiovascular workout 4-6 days/week, 30-45min. At 6 weeks they are to meet with the exercise physiologist to set up a resistance training program and measure resting metabolic rate. Patients are encouraged to stay committed to the exercise program and the bariatric aftercare program. |

What to expect from the psychologist
Our psychologist will help guide you through any psychological issues that may be impeding your ability to be successful with surgery. Pre-operatively, she will consult with you and examine psychological testing that is completed to determine if there are any additional issues that need to be addressed prior to surgery. She may make recommendations to you on other work that can be completed to help you become more insightful about your eating habits and psychological issues that will, in turn, hopefully help you be more successful with surgery. Aside from the evaluation appointment, she is available for assistance, if needed, with any other issues that may come up related to surgery and psychological changes that can occur both before and after surgery. After surgery, she is available for consultation to address issues as they present themselves. In addition, an eight-week psychotherapy support group is available when there are enough patients who are interested in participating.
