Breast Health

The New and Improved Mammogram
The first component of the improved mammogram is digital mammogram technology. Digital mammograms – which provide 3-D images - are electronically stored on a computer, which enables the radiologist on the medical staff to zoom in and adjust contrast levels to get a more accurate diagnosis and read on any problem areas of the breast. A more traditional mammogram simply displays images on a large piece of film. Specifically, the results of a digital mammogram are 28 percent more reliable in women under 50, and detect lumps 90% of the time for women of all ages. Also, since the new mammogram uses high resolution images instead of film, radiation levels are lower than a traditional mammogram.

The second component of Salt Lake Regional Medical Center’s improved mammogram is less discomfort. We now offer the MammoPad®, a foam insert that provides cushioning and warmth between the mammography plate and breast. This addresses the two most common complaints women have about getting mammograms: “It’s cold” and “It hurts.”

Clinical studies show three out of four women experience an average 50 percent decrease in discomfort with the MammoPad®.

In Utah, mammogram screening is more accurate and comfortable at Salt Lake Regional Medical Center. Please contact our staff and/or partner Salt Lake City OB/GYN.

Treatment Options for Incontinence
Pelvic floor disorders affect millions of women who suffer needlessly, not realizing that there is help available. We've developed a unique program that specializes in the evaluation and treatment of this common physical concern. Through education, physical therapy and other treatments, we can help you deal with a variety of problems, including:

  • Muscular or joint impairments (such as pain, weakness or numbness) related to pregnancy, childbirth, childcare activities or menopause
  • Incontinence of the bowel or bladder (mild to severe leakage that occurs when you cough, sneeze or exercise)
  • Abdominal or pelvic pain following surgery
  • Lack of sexual appreciation related to pain or weakness

If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, talk to your doctor, who can prescribe physical therapy for you at our Women's Care & Maternity Center. After you are referred for therapy, we will conduct diagnostic testing through biofeedback to assess strength, posture and integrity of the pelvic floor and abdominal muscles. Based on your evaluation, we will develop a personalized program for you with appropriate goals and a projected timeframe.

To arrange for an evaluation with our women's health physical therapist, please call 801-350-4593.

A Less-Invasive Hysterectomy
Traditional gynecologic surgery, using a large incision for access to the uterus and surrounding anatomy, has been the standard approach to many gynecologic procedures. Unfortunately, this surgery can be accompanied by pain and several weeks of recovery.

The Women’s Care & Maternity Center has another solution. Salt Lake Regional Medical Center is the first and only hospital in Utah to offer robot-assisted surgery with the da Vinci® Surgical System for complex hysterectomies. Through tiny incisions, surgeons on the medical staff can operate with great precision and control, minimizing the pain and risk associated with large incisions, while increasing the likelihood of a faster recovery in most patients.
